Domaine de Benquet

In the heart of the Gers, where the hillsides are blanketed in sunflowers each summer and the air carries the scent of pine resin and Armagnac, Le Houga still holds the quiet, generous character of deep Gascony. It is in this preserved corner of Occitania, far from the tourist trails, that Domaine de Benquet opens its doors to those in search of true space — the kind that is no longer easy to find.

The estate accommodates up to 22 people across its 6 rooms, designed for groups who want to come together without getting in each other's way. Blended families reuniting for the summer, friends scattered to the four corners of France who only gather once a year, generations who need to find each other again around a large table: Benquet knows all these faces. The dishwasher is one of the stay's quiet allies — because after a proper Gascon meal, no one wants to battle with the washing-up.

Days naturally gravitate toward the pool, the undisputed center of the whole property. People linger there through the afternoon, putting the world to rights late into the evening when the Gers heat still hangs in the air. The youngest guests — and the not-so-young — find their entertainment in the games available on site, which stretch out the evenings and quietly reknit bonds without anyone really having planned it.

Beyond the property, the surrounding countryside reveals itself at its own pace: village markets where local producers sell their foie gras and country wines, medieval bastide towns scattered across the département, the Camino de Santiago routes that have crossed this land of passage for centuries. But one can also do none of this at all, and that is perhaps the greatest luxury Domaine de Benquet offers.

What guests take with them when they leave is that rare feeling of having truly slowed down — not on the surface, but deep in the body.
