About

In the heart of the Passeier Valley, where South Tyrol still holds its wild character and Germanic traditions intact, the Obertalerhof stands like a mountain chalet outside of time. St. Martin in Passeier — a hamlet of granite and dried hay, surrounded by larch forests and peaks brushing three thousand meters — imposes a different rhythm from the very first moment. One comes here not to do, but to be.

The chalet occupies an isolated position, away from roads and noise, with a view of the Alpine ridges that stops any conversation dead. The hosts, whose warmth surfaces in every review as a simple given, have thought through every detail so that nothing is lacking: the chalet is immaculate, richly appointed, and the wood-burning stove crackles with that particular care only locals know how to give it. Each morning, without your having to go down to the village, fresh rolls, eggs, and even a pizza made their way up from the valley — an attentiveness that turns a simple stay into something resembling domestic happiness.

The place accommodates a human-scaled group in comfortable conditions, with enough space for everyone to find their own corner of quiet. The silence is total — not the silence of cities on a Sunday morning, but that of high mountain pastures where the only movement is the passing of clouds above the ridges. You settle in within a few hours, and very quickly lose any desire to leave.

What guests carry with them when they leave the Obertalerhof is not just the memory of a beautiful chalet. It is the texture of those mornings when the mountain was still wrapped in mist, the scent of wood burning slowly, the kindness of hosts who knew exactly when to appear and when to step away. A Tyrolean interlude one thinks back on for a long time, with a faint sadness at having already closed it.

THE GREAT: -spotless and many amenities -The host was very kind and attentive to our needs -The amazing view -The very relaxing quietness -The secluded Location - lighting and attending to the wood furnace THE GOOD: -would appreciate a better mattress and pillow but it was ok -you need to light wood for the sauna and wait 15-20min to warm up an experience in its own THE NOT SO GOOD -I guess because of the cold below 0 temperature the outdoor bath near the dry sauna which is shown was not available at the time of our stay -very weak WI-FI, must be improved! -the use of electricity is limited so you cannot boil water and use the stove at the same time, which might be an issue if you are cooking for many overall I highly recommend this location and will definitely consider coming again but if any of the amenities are important to you make sure they are working before booking

A beautiful mountain chalet in the Passeier Valley. Magnificent views, absolute peace and quiet in nature, and the best hosts. Bread rolls, eggs, and even pizza were delivered from the valley, along with great tips for the region. I highly recommend it. The journey there is a bit of a trek, but it's well worth it.

This was our second stay at the mountain chalet, and this time we came as a large family with two small grandchildren. Since there was some construction noise, the owners were very accommodating and allowed us to use an extra room in the holiday apartment. The weather wasn't great, but that didn't bother us at all. The house is so cozy, and even in the rain, the walk to the sauna is fun, with the view of the clouds in front of you being breathtaking. We used the whirlpool a lot, and the helicopter transport of building materials into the forest was quite a spectacle. The fresh eggs taste amazing, and everyone at the Oberthaler Hof is so welcoming and warm. We'll definitely be back a third time.

A very nice mountain hut. Unfortunately, the weather wasn't ideal, but otherwise it's very well located and has a beautiful view. The bread roll, eggs, and butter service in the morning is worth its weight in gold. The owners are extremely friendly and accommodating. Whether English, German, Italian, or Swiss, they speak every language.
