No fuss, no frills: just stone, wood, and light that shifts from hour to hour as the sun moves across the mountains.

What surprises as much as the architecture is the food. The kitchen at Forte di Machaby sources its ingredients locally, from farms and gardens in the valley. The meals — included or available on-site — bring together the authentic flavors of the Aosta Valley: aged cheeses, local cured meats, hearty soups. A rare quality at a price that will prove one of the stay's best surprises.

Around the fortress, hiking trails fan out toward the ridgelines, medieval ruins, and viewpoints overlooking the Dora Baltea below. Located at the entrance to the Aosta Valley, surrounded by lush, pristine greenery, it gave me a truly indescribable feeling of peace and relaxation. Here are the strengths that completely won me over: The hospitality of the owners: Wonderful people, incredibly friendly, cordial, and always available. This magical place, nestled in the woods, captivated us from the first moment. Getting there requires a 20-minute climb, so it's best to bring only the bare essentials in a backpack. But once you arrive, time seems to stand still and the view is simply breathtaking. The rooms are spacious and clean, the common areas are well-organized, and there's plenty of room to read or play board games, as everything is available to guests. Andrea and Laura, the hosts, are very helpful and welcoming, eager to make everyone feel at home. We were also fortunate enough to dine outdoors on two evenings, with excellent food and pleasant company. It's an ideal place for those who need or want to slow down, unplug, and not use their phones, to connect with nature and rediscover the kindness and genuineness of people. Sometimes we tend to forget how much beauty is around us.

We visited this quaint fort on the recommendation of a friend. The location is truly beautiful, and the building is very well-maintained. I stopped for lunch with my partner and can't recommend enough the excellent food: the portions are generous, and the quality is evident. We chatted a bit with the staff, who gave us some tips about the place. What more can we say? We'll definitely be back, especially considering the summer heat. Bravo!
