Domaine des Fresneaux

Between the gentle hills of the Charente-Maritime and the vineyards that herald Cognac, Saint-Georges-des-Coteaux still holds that rare quality: inhabited silence. The house accommodates up to 21 people across its 11 bedrooms — enough space for everyone to find their corner, enough closeness for the group to stay a group. In the morning, the cooks bustle about in the kitchen, equipped with a dishwasher that handles large gatherings without complaint. The laundry goes round in the washing machine while the others linger over coffee. Here, logistics fade into the background, leaving room for the pleasure of being together.

In summer, life tilts toward the pool. Whole afternoons are spent there, between dives, reading, and naps by the water. As evening comes, the barbecue takes over: sausages from the Saintes market, vegetables from the neighbour's garden, a bottle of Pineau des Charentes. The table stretches on under the stars, and so do the conversations. For cooler nights — a hesitant April, an encroaching October — the fireplace reasserts itself, gathering everyone around its flames in an almost instinctive ritual.

The parking allows several cars to arrive without worry, the wifi to stay connected without a second thought. The games on offer extend evenings with the lightness of friendly competition, the kind that creates stories people bring up for years.
