About

In the heights of the Sierra de Gata, at the far western edge of Extremadura, the village of Acebo seems to have escaped time. Cobbled lanes, slate roofs, dark stone facades: here, nature reclaims its territory the moment you step outside. It is in this raw, authentic setting that Casa Rural el Pajar nestles — a character cottage hewn from rock, its thick walls telling the story of several centuries of pastoral life.

Once a goatherd's shelter, the house still carries the memory of those who watched over flocks on these wooded slopes. Stone, wood, silence: everything here invites you to slow down. The property is designed to accommodate large groups, with enough space for everyone to find their own corner without getting in each other's way. In the evenings, everyone gathers around a shared table, windows open onto the darkness of a sky that light pollution has not yet reached — the stars here are thick and low.

In summer, the pool becomes the gravitational centre of the day: you plunge in to escape the dry heat of Extremadura, before heading out again to explore the trails that wind through chestnut groves and oak forests. The property is perfectly suited to families who bring their dogs — the animals enjoy the freedom of the place as much as their owners do. The owner, universally praised for his kindness, makes sure every stay runs as smoothly as possible.

A word of honesty: the access road calls for a little patience, but it is precisely this winding path that keeps the world at a distance. And even in the rain — Easter visitors will attest to this — the house reveals itself as spectacular, its generous proportions and hushed atmosphere turning every grey day into a cocoon.

What do guests take home in their bags? Not just photographs of sunsets over the sierra. Rather a different pace, the memory of an unlikely starlit sky, and a quiet certainty that there are still places where you truly disconnect.

Miguel G.★★★★★

We spent a few days there during Easter week and, despite the rain, we were delighted. The house was spectacular; in our case, we stayed in the goatherd's cottage. A stone house with thick walls, two very spacious bedrooms with comfortable beds, and a beautiful, large fireplace that was easy to light and had excellent draft, heating the house very quickly. Everything was very clean and well-equipped. The surroundings are like something out of a fairytale; you're in the middle of a forest of oak and chestnut trees. It's also a very pleasant walk from the village, which is also very pretty and peaceful, with cobbled streets, granite houses, and a lovely church—for those who appreciate them. Carlos, the owner, was very attentive and thoughtful. He came to the village to accompany us to the house and gave us advice on routes and things to see in the area. We've already decided to return, as the rain was rather relentless this time.

It's a wonderful place. Surrounded by nature, spacious enough for large groups, and in great condition. The owner is incredibly friendly. Highly recommended! The only downside is that the access road is narrow and it would be nice if they fixed it.

An ideal place to disconnect if you love nature, walking in the countryside, and stargazing at night. Perfect for going with dogs. I stayed in the goat pen and enjoyed the pool. A refuge from the heat; I'll be back.

A spectacular house, quite remote but easily accessible by car with patience. The house is incredibly well-maintained, with everything you could possibly need and more. There's plenty of firewood, so you won't be cold. The photos don't do it justice; it's much better in person. The owner is very thoughtful and attentive, but sometimes he seemed overly focused on us, which was rather uncomfortable. That's my only complaint. But I would definitely return a thousand times. I also want to mention that the owner was incredibly flexible with our departure, which was much appreciated.

A dream house in a magical location, perfect for relaxing and rejuvenating. Thanks to Carlos, the owner, for being incredibly welcoming, dedicated, attentive, and kind. He provided us with reviews, recommended outings, and quickly resolved any issues we had with the house. We would love to return and highly recommend it!
