Tucked into the deep Galician countryside in the province of Lugo, this stone-walled character cottage welcomes groups of up to 10 across its bright, spacious bedrooms — generous enough that everyone has their own space without the house ever feeling crowded. Inside, the layout is built for shared living: a fully equipped kitchen made for long, convivial dinners, and wide communal areas where the whole party gathers naturally. Outside, afternoons drift by the pool, evenings settle on the terrace, and the well-kept gardens hold the last of the day's warmth — and the conversations that come with it. The surrounding area rewards those who take their time. Local markets are stocked with honest Galician produce — octopus from the feria, freshly baked empanadas, cheeses aged in nearby cellars. Stone villages still doze beneath their hórreos, the raised granaries that have become a symbol of rural Galicia. Close to the region's main city, the Roman walls — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — stand as quiet proof that this land is old, and knows it. Mato sits along one of the quieter stretches of the Camino, the kind of place pilgrims pass through without stopping. That's a mistake worth not making. Days here have a way of stretching out — swimming, long meals, conversations that run well past midnight. You'll leave with more than you came for.

An ideal place to disconnect from the daily grind and connect with friends. We were a group of 37 people, and we rented all three houses, including the shared areas. Everything was fantastic. Each house is different, but overall they're all nice and have spacious living rooms and kitchens for gathering. In addition to each house, the shared games room is wonderful. We had enough space to use it as a dining room for everyone. It has a fireplace, pool table, ping-pong, foosball, a projector screen, a speaker, and even an indoor barbecue that turned out great! The owner left us plenty of firewood for the whole weekend and offered us more if we needed it. The gardens are very well maintained and have three swimming pools with sun loungers. There's also an area for playing football and pétanque. The stay was fantastic! The owner also resolved any minor issues we had immediately, and booking is super easy and doesn't require a deposit. We were incredibly comfortable, and there are no noise rules, so we could play music and dance until whenever we wanted. It's true that some things aren't in perfect condition, like the broken tiles on the common room floor, and some bedrooms and bathrooms could use a little maintenance, but overall, these minor details more than made up for it. They also provide shampoo and shower gel packets, napkins, and extra toilet paper—a real treat! There's plenty of kitchenware in all the houses, and we use it in the common room, which also has a dishwasher. The fact that practically every bedroom has its own bathroom, even if it's small, is a plus that makes living together much easier. Plus, there are some beautiful viewpoints near the house overlooking the Ribeira Sacra and the Miño River. The town of Chantada, with supermarkets and a bakery, is also very close. If you only book one of the houses, I'd recommend This CasaGiga; it's the largest and offers the most privacy in the garden and pool area. In short, I highly recommend this place.
